Highly recommended. Mar 27, Meredith Spidel rated it it was amazing. Disney has created a magical world for fantasy lovers to get lost in, and three cheers for the release of the 3rd book in this series.
The tale continues and will continue to engage and enthrall fans of Shadow Magic! Thanks for sending us an ARC for review, Disney! Apr 13, Megan rated it really liked it Shelves: books-with-magic-read , underground-book-trade.
It is never pleasant to have the agenda overrun the story. Dec 04, Ziggy rated it it was amazing. Choice book 2, Quarter 2.
Burning magic by Joshua Khan is a fantasy book. Burning magic is set in the Sultanate of Fire and the Shardlands, the ruins of the kingdoms of the ancient sorcerers.
Jambiya is Kleefs least favorite brother and the second oldest. Jambiya Choice book 2, Quarter 2. Jambiya is a brutal and cruel person who kills people if they have something wrong even though he is blind himself.
He owns a fierce efreet, a desert fire spirit. Jambiya is a static character because he just wants more power throughout the book. Kleef was introduced in the first book when the Solars brought him as a hostage of theirs.
He is kind, honorable and just plain a good person. He is learning magic still, but he is very good at it, whether in fire or in inspiring others.
He picks Thorn, and the idiot Gabriel Solar as his champions, whom he can take on the journey. His father and another family member recently died leaving him bathed in grief for not being able to save them, and he isn't the calm and peaceful boy that Thorn once knew.
Kleef is a dynamic character because one second he is calm, and then he is fierce and powerful. Lily is a static character because she is mostly just a strong character over all, but also a little dynamic towards the end.
Thorn is still stubborn as always, if not more. Hades took the trip to the Sultanate of Fire too, so he causes some trouble in Nalas, the city of the capital.
Thorn is chosen as one of Kleefs champions on the race to the phoenix. Thorn is also burned terribly by Fern on the hand so for a day or two he can't shoot a bow, and he then has a complete mental breakdown.
In the Shardlands they encounter a storm of lost spirits, which make them see terrible things, the things of their worst dreams, things that only their deep soul knows it fears the most.
Thorn is a dynamic character because he is always at war with himself and unsecure. Jambiya is trying to become Sultan but Thorn and Kleef know that he would be a bad ruler, so they need to get that phoenix.
Kleefs sister is also trying to rule and she has been practicing magic so her and Lily can band together and conquer the other kingdoms with their magic, but Lily doesn't join her and the Sultanate executioner, Kai, tries to kill Lily.
Your family and friends are your greatest strength. I think that is the theme statement in Burning magic because Thorns friends are his best support, Kleef has family and friends to support him, and Lily has some family and lots of friends to help her.
It gave you a good sense of Nalas, how it smells like sea salt and how it shimmers at night with the thousands of candles being lit.
The description in it could not be better, it enchanted my senses and really brought me into the world of Burning magic.
Jun 07, The Belle rated it it was amazing. When last we saw the young and gothic Queen Lilith Shadow and her outlaw best friend Thorn, they were doing their best to protect the country of Gehenna from a lethal army of trolls, all while attempting to control the droves of undead that were insistent upon rejoining society falling off limbs, and all.
Scorned by her subjects for doing the unthinkable - being a female who wove her own magic - Lily had an exhausting season. One problem on top of another, ending with dramatically solved myste When last we saw the young and gothic Queen Lilith Shadow and her outlaw best friend Thorn, they were doing their best to protect the country of Gehenna from a lethal army of trolls, all while attempting to control the droves of undead that were insistent upon rejoining society falling off limbs, and all.
One problem on top of another, ending with dramatically solved mysteries resulting in a few very surprising and devastating consequences.
The least of which was her Uncle Pan. Lily is in desperate need of a change of scenery while she settles into her new circumstances and attempts again to solidify herself as Queen of Gehenna.
The desert empire is home to one of her best friends, the fire-wielding and charmingly adorable K'leef. Once one of her potential marital suitors, K'leef has transitioned into the role of doting confidante, taking the pressure off of his and Lily's relationship and allowing things to grow stronger between them organically.
It's a situation that suits the young queen, especially as the relationship between she and Thorn is so volatile and complicated.
Anxious to put bad times behind her and create some long-lasting memories full of bright fun and shiny new experiences, Lily descends the ship after months at sea and steps into the land of sand and fire-magic.
But instead of easily sliding into a beautiful reunion with their old friend, Lily and her companion Thorn find themselves stepping instead into a veritable pit full of sand vipers.
With the death of their ruler leaving an absence on the throne, K'leef's family has begun rallying around one of their own to take up the place as the new Sultan - on the surface.
Beneath the facade of bonded family and unfaltering loyalty, dissension in the ranks is brewing thicker than a potion in an old witch's well-seasoned cauldron.
No matter how careful and diplomatic Lily tries to be with her footing, she continues to land herself in hotter water than she ever imagined possible, and she's having a lot of trouble figuring out how to navigate herself to fairer seas.
And then the unspeakable happens - a shocking murder. When the gentle sibling making the accession to the throne is violently killed by a cleverly wielded bit of magic, K'leef's family helplessly watches as the Sultanate is thrown into chaos and terror.
As K'leef is forced into making some hard decisions about who will and who should settle on the throne, he finds himself sent out on a quest of epic proportions - one laced and threaded with the promise of sheer doom.
With unlikely allies Thorn and Gabriel Solar at his side, the young man is sure to either succeed spectacularly. The contentious three are on the hunt for a phoenix, a revered bird that only resides in the treacherous Shardlands, a place wrought with hidden dangers and vicious beasts alike.
With deceit and deception at every turn, K'Leef has no idea if he will leave the nightmarish Shardlands with his life intact, let alone in possession of the legendary firebird that will bring order and balance to his beloved household and land of his people.
Left behind at the family castle in the Sultanate to investigate the murder, Lily is dealing with her own worries and dangers behind the scenes.
Her magic is changing into something she can barely control, and she has no where to turn for answers to her myriad of questions. With every almond-shaped eye upon her in this foreign place, Lily must maintain an air of rigidity and stability, but she's beginning to crack.
When she finds herself betrayed by someone she once thought a friend, Lily's need of unraveling her magical mysteries become dire.
Will she be able to regain her foothold as the Queen of Shadows without crossing that line into terrible and terrifying? Or will her life become forfeit to a cunning master of deceit?
I have been on pins and needles waiting for the third installment of Joshua Khan's Shadow Magic series. The first two were spellbinding and indeed so magical that I had no trouble devouring them within hours of bringing them home.
An engaging cast of versatile and empowering characters, mystical and endearing settings all over the map, gritty and dark humor laced with just the tiniest of romantic intrigue - I have been hooked since that first page of Dream Magic.
Khan is a master at weaving a world that is relatable to a variety of ages; spinning his own web of originality with a cunning and cleverness that is becoming rare in the fantasy world.
The flaws in each character work to humanize them in a way that brings the reader closer onto their stage and story, and its done so effortlessly that turning the pages requires no degree of work - it is instead, a pleasure.
It is a difficult task sometimes, to engage the mid-grade reader. That particular generation seems very caught up in the right here - right now aspect of living, and books just simply "take too long to get to the point" as is my own personal experiences.
With classics like Harry Potter and Narnia becoming dusty on shelves as a DVD is popped into the player, this age bracket tends to take the easy way out.
But there are a few books that move so quickly as to retain the attention of the reader, all while making the young reader feel as though they are witnessing something that lies just on the cusp of dangerous territory, thus making it all the more desirable - this series is one of those set of novels.
The setting is dark and gloomy, as the name of the castle intones, and the overall theme of death is drawn in both a literal and humorous sense.
Real issues are tackled with an abundance of realism and emotional weight, checking off so many of my personal requirements for a meaty and complete fantasy novel.
And there are plenty of zombies. I can't give Burning Magic more than 5 stars, but in my opinion, it deserves every star in the sky.
I have been so enamored with this series, and I was devastated to read the ending - not because it was bad, but because it was over. I am holding out hope for more books in the series, and I hope that this perfect novel receives the accolades and marketing that it so justly deserves.
It truly has been a magical ride. Dec 12, Anthony Rivera rated it it was amazing Shelves: shadow-magic-novel. I like this book because the story was engaging and the author developed the main protagonist's very well thought the book for the third time.
Also the story line was also well thought out with a great beginning, middle, and ending just like the first and second book: Shadow Magic, Dream Magic.
There he meets another of the main pro I like this book because the story was engaging and the author developed the main protagonist's very well thought the book for the third time.
There he meets another of the main protagonist named Lilith Shadow the misters of the great house and the misters and commoner become friends Read about in the first book.
But in the third book they are now more free to talk to each other. He also did a good job in adding just a hint of Romance in it while not taking the fun and action away from the story line, just like he did in the first and second book.
The author also did well in providing a twist toward the beginning that gave the middle and ending more of a suspense and a scenes of victory for the main protagonist's.
I would recommend this book to other readers. I would recommend this book to other readers because it's filled with action, mystery, magic, and adventure.
Also a great story must always have a good beginning, middle, and twist. Jun 15, hpboy13 rated it really liked it Shelves: middle-grade-fantasy.
After a less-than-stellar second installment, Khan bounces back with the exciting third installment of this series.
As a standalone installment of the series, Burning Magic is a superb 5-star adventure. Barely anything about the status quo changes.
Sep 06, Bryan Stevenson rated it really liked it. I wonder how much my ratings are based on what I've currently been reading.
I gave the first two books in this series 3 stars, but this one was an absolute joy to read. Maybe the youth fiction book I read prior to this, which I just liked OK, made this one even more enjoyable?
The characters are easy to root for. Plenty of action, plenty of character development, mystery, pretty well-defined magic, an I wonder how much my ratings are based on what I've currently been reading.
Plenty of action, plenty of character development, mystery, pretty well-defined magic, and solid world building. It's tough to make a self-absorbed, narcissistic, elitist into a sympathetic figure, but Khan does.
It's a little bit different to have a dark sorcerer who practices necromancy as the lead good guy, but Lilith is the best. There's a find line between giving the reader too much info so they know what is coming, and giving them too little so that it doesn't make sense.
Khan bounces around this line a little bit, so that a few things are predictable, and others seemingly come out of nowhere. Dafür ist es gerade notwendig, dass im Hintergrund einiges geändert wird und dadurch resultierend die alte App nicht mehr funktioniert.
