Amazon tricked me into renting this and I want my money back. Amazon led me to believe I was renting the full length movie Les Miserables by using the same screen image as the feature and describing the length as 1 hr and 44 min.
Then switched us to something called Les Miserables Short. This leaves a very bad taste. I opened it and there were no subtitles and no settings and it was clear something was wrong.
Now I can't cancel. I want my money back. One person found this helpful. This is not, as is indicated in the initial screen, the whole movie but a short.
THe initial description screen did not mention that this was a short. Any amounts paid for this should be refunded immediately. After having just watched the feature-length version of this I wanted to go back and see the award-winning short it was based off of.
The feature is heart-stopping and the short, in the same vein, is worth the watch! As a minute condensed story this modern take on a precursor to the feature-length's revolution against a broken system, I am in awe of this write-director Ladj Ly, the three main actors, and all of the vibrant surrounding non-actors.
Do not purchase. This is a short film not the full version. The icon you will select is for the full movie and does not clearly state it is the short version.
Once the movie begins to play Amazon will not allow you to cancel the order. This is deceptive. This was shown on the screen to be the full length version when I ordered it.
That would be 1 hour 44 minutes. After I purchased it it came out as 15 minute version. I did not watch the short version.

It comes close to capturing the spirit of the book - much closer than that horrendous musical! It doesn't look all that dated, either!
My only major gripe is the portrayal of the Bishop of Digne. He's too stern, not quite the pure countenance of humility and Christlike love that I imagined.
He is arguably one of the most important characters in the story because he is sort of an allegorical Christ figure.
The story has been called, a Chase, a hunter-hunted, quest for freedom, a romance, among other things.
But really, the heart of the story is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Mercy over justice. The sacrifice of all things. The grace of God to lift men from the damning oppression of raw justice.
But only after one is willing to submit everything as a sacrifice on the alter does the Lord truly liberate us Valjean from the claim that the law Javert has on us we having all broken it.
Now, I don't expect a big budget, star studded motion picture to fulfill this vision, but this particular film, whether by deliberate effort or no, retains it's spiritual foundations, without which, there would be no story worth telling.
Acted but not sung makes all the difference. I showed this to my mom and its now her favorite film. The original Ben Hurr used to be her favorite but this has now taken its place.
The acting is superv and all the actors are believable. The only downside is that the movie ending doesnt follow the book but its still an amazing film.

Uma Thurman as sad Fantine was remarkable. I kept waiting for her to pull out a Japanese sword. Refreshing to see great actors in a film at the beginning of their career.
Better than the musical from Classy movie. A must have. Uma Thurman, Geoffery Rush, and Liam Neeson are exceptional in how they produce the psychological drama that Hugo's work requires.
Though an older film, I see this film as better produced and more thought provoking than the new musical with Jackman, Hathaway, and Crowe.
As a French teacher, I try to get the students to think about culture and answer the question of WHY. This film has a psychological aspect that the musical doesn't capture quite correctly.
Though the film takes some liberties with Hugo's original writing don't all Hollywood films produced from novels anyways??!!
It is one of my favorites to watch over and over again while challenging myself to think about the themes of redemption and reconciliation in life.
Due to the phenomenal lessons about life in the film, I also ask my students and my own children to take steps that are honorable to become the model citizen and exceptional person that is honoring to others in society.
I just happened to come across this movie about 4 years ago and absolutely fell in love with it! I love all movies where the underdog comes out on top and this is definitely one of those movies.
It shows that no matter how badly a person is treated in their lifetimes, that they can still forgive those that treated them so horribly and also extend mercy to them as well.

I love this version of Les Miserables, great photography, colour, scenery, dialogue, actors. I bought it though I had already seen it. I confess right now that I have never read the book.
Liam Neeson was very well cast in his role as the main character, Jean Valjean, an ex-convict. Geoffrey Rush, who played Valjean's persecutor, though good, didn't quite match up to Charles Laughton who played that role in a much earlier version.
I think Jean Valjean Neeson should have been canonised for his patience with his adopted daughter I think she was trying to get him killed personally and his relentless persecutor.
