I loved mermaids. It is a type of genre. How did you make the film? Agnieszka Smoczynska : The process of making the movie was interesting.
We started with a treatment and worked with music, musicians and a choreographer to create the first draft.
Then we gave it to the sound designer and he wrote a sound script, like a score, and he put in music, some songs. Some went into the movie and some went out.
Each character has their own song which creates a diverse array. Dancing was also very specific in Poland and behind the Iron Curtain.
There were very special shows, with a magician, music, acts, dancing. People came to the place every weekend. It was all very 80s.
The set design was also very 80s but there were modern elements and lots of my own memories of colors.
Outside of the restaurants, there was no color. Everything was all very gray…until the 90s. It was also important for us not to put too much politics.
As a child I did not know about such things and so the mermaids do not know such things. How did you fund the film? Polish TV also shows the movies and there is guaranteed Polish distribution.
The story was so crazy that every producer said no one outside of Poland would understand it. Only National Company, a year-old traditional studio believed in it because the head of the company likes dancing so much.
This is the most amazing, mouth dropping film I saw at Sundance this year. Firstly, hats off to the programmers and the organization for finding and presenting this one.
Sundance's docs and international features are usually superb but this one takes the cake. We describe it - hold onto your hats now - as a lesbian vampire mermaid horror musical comedy.
No kidding. And it has a female director and 2 amazing female mermaid leads. More powerful woman filmmaking.
What's it about?? I dunno. Maybe don't ever mess with or fall in love with a mermaid even if she's a cute, nude and impossibly young.
Your life is no longer yours then. Takes place in a very shabby music hall type bar where the um 'girls' are put on display. Pour water on them and they grow 12 foot fish tails.
Dry them off and they become 'normal' girls except for no normal female genitals, just smooth skin down there. The musical numbers work very well.
I couldn't stop watching or laughing, amazed at how this rollicking weird story just keeps going. In Polish made in Poland. It must be one of the most well crafted and cutting edge productions I have seen this year, with a profoundly clever use of social media and virtual worlds along side the "real world" of its main character Dominik.
Trying to find his place in the world, Dominik is a dark brooding character, deeply sensitive and easily hurt despite the bravado and intelligence he uses to hide behind.
Quietly popular, he suffers a grave injustice when a fellow classmate reveals to the world via social media his becoming sexually arousal during a judo class.
What results is a crass and public humiliation, as even close friends join the greater network of social commentators many of whom have no personal knowledge of him in belittling and humiliating him.
Such is the nature of public forums such as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, where individuals can hide behind their respective personas whilst engaging in an orchestrated hostility against a single person, much like the public games of ancient Rome where the faceless crowds participated in the life and death of individuals doomed to the arena floor.
Indeed social media has become both a liberator of those individuals forced into the shadows, as well as a dangerous avenue for some of the most vile aspects of human nature.
It is this irony, which transcends the film, in that the internet is both the cause of his pain as well as the avenue for his identity. He retreats from the "real world" which has betrayed him, and finds solace in the avatar world created by like minded individuals, all of whom are suffering their own type of pain.

Written and edited extremely well, the audience finds themselves quickly drawn into the "Suicide Room", strangely romanced by it, whilst acutely aware of an underlying danger.
Yet its an attractive danger, and you like Dominik cannot help being overwhelmed. The final scene makes for one of the most jarring I have seen in awhile.
A great film, and one which should be seen by anyone interested in such a story. That's not a film genre like thriller or comedy and it makes no sense to me.
This film is not made to popularize homosexuality in the cinema and I don't know how it ended up in this strange category. It's a good psychological drama about a boy who through a series of events changes from confident son from well-off family into human wreck.
Quite tense and dark this film use animation to visualize online chats but the real drama happens in a real world and the boy's mind.

Dominik played brilliantly by Jakub Gierzsal is the only child of materially successful parents; in the lieu of love and affection, material effects and high-living stand in the stead of familial relationships - all living separate lives, occasionally meeting like satellites in orbit.
In this sense it's not difficult to account for Dominik's selfish and self-obsessed tendencies at times he does come across as the archetypal spoilt brat when he knows no different.
With his teenage hormones a-raging Dominik is humiliated before his peers after some same-sex dalliances go viral. This is the pivotal point of the film; in the throes of shame and isolation Dominik meets the mysterious Sylwia who invites him the to the titular virtual chat-room where she holds court as a quasi-queen with an entourage of deferential on-line followers.
The focus of their discussions is when and how best to cut short their lives. In a nutshell, that's all there is to it, superficially. However, Suicide Room is more than just that on a number of levels.
Primarily, it examines the correlation between the freedom that the internet and indeed any major technological advance provides and the fragmantation of traditional family networks, to the point of co-existence.

But Dominick does not want to go near the off button. As he becomes even more of a recluse, he locks himself in his bedroom and just lives out his fantasies on line with a mysterious woman Sylwia, who is the queen in the avatar world of the Suicide Room.
There are all sorts of on line Gothy geeks who all seem to worship her. This is on the pretext that she really will one day pluck up the courage to do herself in.
But Dominick falls for her faster than a WWE slamdown. This is actually a very well made Polish film. The animated parts when we are in Cyber World are also very good, the plot is also original with no real twists as such but more of an inevitability instead that adds to the dread and helps to pull you along.
All of the acting is really laudable. My problem is with the star, Dominick, he is just a total git, how anyone could be bothered to put up with him is beyond me, but he does it so well that is Jakub Gierszal who plays him that it as to be admired.
I know teenagers can be a bit difficult, but he almost breaks the mould. It is also very powerful in the way it does not pull its punches and the whole subject is so dark that this was always going to be slightly uncomfortable viewing.
All in all a very good independent film from Poland and it does have above average sub titles, with a smattering of English, one for European film fans and those who like it a bit on the dark side and with heavy eye make up.
