I have to say, it's a fabulous cast, and having read some of the reviews, I had high hopes. Sadly it didn't live up to my expectations. Yes, it was occasionally mildly amusing and the acting was pretty good, but that's about it.
If you expect a side splittingly funny period comedy - this is not it. Absolutely nothing about this movie is remotely intelligent or historically accurate, never mind side splittingly funny.
And no, this movie does not show in any way life during the Elisabethan period as suggested by some critics. I know, I know, apparently it was never intended to be historically accurate - that's probably too much to ask from a comedy anyway.
Still, some kind of clever plot, actual funny humour and perhaps even a little depth surely should have been possible. It's hard to believe that this rather boring fluff received 16 Oscars.
But if you are not bothered about all this and just want to watch flat but colourful and a bit stupid entertainment without having to think while just wanting to switch off after a long day at work, this could be it.
It's certainly a colourful spectacle! This films main conceit is that Shakespeare in London, has writers block. Under pressure from his very successful competitor Christopher Marlow and the people he owes money to, Shakespear hurridly starts his new play without any idea what he will come up with, assembling a cast and making it up rather ameturistically on the way.
Shakespeare feels uncomfortably aware that there is something very likeable about this new player. But it must all turn out badly, as there is no future for the lovers - a case of life imitating art?
Sumptuously filmed glorious colour pallette superb sound, clear witty dialogue, superb writing throughout the cast all extremel;y well played all the way down to bit parts, this is superb cinema.
I defy anyone who sees this not to laugh out loud, or shed a tear at some points throughout this film. Absolutely no historical foundation in fact but who cares, it is a very good story and highly entertaining.

This could have been a paste up of any "old timey" scenery. It was, in fact, extremely accurately done from start to finish.

This gem of a movie, for anyone who hasn't seen it, catapulted Gwenyth Paltrow to the public's attention on the strength of her double performances as a young lady bretrothed to a suitor she doesn't love, and disguised as a young boy to fulfill her dream of performing on stage in Bard's time, young boys played female roles-the stage was "unseemly" for females.
Many of the laughs come from the references to Shakespeare's plays and background and the implication that this fictional story is responsible for his rise to prominance as an Elizabethan playwrght.

The casting is impeccable. I've read much of Shakespeare's works. It is a funny thing. But I never really thought about William's life.
We only ever see the one portrait of the man if he even existed. So I guess my un-thought out assumption about him is that he was born a frumpy, bookish, middle-aged man who sequestered himself away and somehow created those stories and wonderful words out of a vacuum.
